Requirements of the EN ISO 20471 standard for high-visibility trousers
The EN ISO 20471 standard describes in detail the requirements for high-visibility clothing such as high-visibility trousers. It specifies the surface area in m² on which the visible materials should be applied in order to achieve one of the 3 protection classes. For the highest class 3, the reflective elements must be applied to at least 0.20 m² and the fluorescent background material to 0.80 m² of the garment. For class 2, 0.13 m² or 0.50 m² are sufficient, and for class 1, 0.10 m² or 0.14 m² are sufficient.

In addition to the minimum surface area, according to the standard, the placement of the reflectors is also crucial for ideal all-round visibility. They must be placed around the torso and on the arms. This prescribed 360-degree visibility means that the wearer is clearly visible from all angles in poor light conditions.
So the higher the class, the higher the visibility. Depending on the working conditions and risks to which the wearer is exposed, a decision should be made on the necessary protection class of the high-visibility clothing. It should be noted that high-visibility trousers must be combined with high-visibility jackets to achieve protection classes 2 or 3.
